When the twentieth century was ushered in, Carthage was over 10,000 people strong and home to a variety of agricultural, industrial and commercial concerns. Many older stores and banks downtown
received new Carthage stone facades and the Carthage "capitalists" continued to build large homes in popular turn-of-the-century styles.
Joseph Leggett commissioned local builder Joseph Prather to build his home at 1106 Grand, and it was completed in 1901. The Leggett House is now a wonderful Bed & Breakfast owned by Don and Joy Sisco.
